つま先が分かれたスプリットトゥ「タビ」のシルエットは、その名前の由来である15世紀の日本の伝統的な靴下（足袋）から着想を得たスタイルで、1989年コレクションで初めて発表されました。

1988年にフランスでMaison Martin Margielaとして創業。名門アントワープ王立芸術アカデミー出身で「アントワープの6人」の一人であるMartin Margielaは、脱構築的な手法でファッション界に革命を起こしました。2014年にJohn Gallianoがクリエイティブ・ディレクターに就任し、翌年「Maison Margiela」へ改名。オートクチュールからプレタポルテまで、独創的で反骨精神に満ちたコレクションを展開し続けています。
